Which Ethiopia eSIM plan fits your trip?

Choose your Ethiopia eSIM by matching the allowance and validity period to your trip, then compare the selected product details with the local network, band and speed references already shown on this page.

Start with the length of your stay, then allow for navigation, messaging, streaming and work use. Each option below is a plan size that is currently available for this destination.

Short trip

1 GB / 7 days

Best for: A short visit with maps, messages and occasional browsing.

This option pairs the 1 GB allowance with a stated validity period of 7 days.

Usage tip: Save maps before longer journeys and use Wi-Fi for large downloads.

Two-week trip

2 GB / 15 days

Best for: A stay of around two weeks with regular navigation and messaging.

The 2 GB allowance remains available across a stated validity period of 15 days.

Usage tip: Keep automatic app updates and cloud backups on Wi-Fi.

Longer or higher use

10 GB or more / 30 days

Best for: A longer stay or more frequent streaming, video calls or work use.

The 10 GB or more / 30 days profile provides a larger data pool than the short-trip options on this page.

Usage tip: Compare the allowance with your normal phone usage and monitor it during the trip.

Coverage in Ethiopia

Safaricom Ethiopia network does not cover the Tigray region as of mid-2025. Ethio Telecom 4G is concentrated in Addis Ababa and regional capitals; many rural areas remain 3G-only or 2G-only.

How to check mobile coverage in Ethiopia

The Ethiopia mobile network source is linked below as a public network reference. Check the places on your itinerary where the source offers local detail, then confirm the network information for the selected eSIM product. The operator table on this page provides the country-level reference, while the selected product details identify which network information applies to your plan.

Accommodation and daily stops

Check your accommodation and the places you expect to visit in Ethiopia. Indoor reception can differ from an outdoor map, so keep the property Wi-Fi details available as well.

Journeys between stops

Review the full route rather than checking only the arrival city. Save tickets, addresses and maps offline before longer road or rail journeys.

Borders and onward travel

Check the selected product scope for every country on your itinerary. Your Ethiopia plan and a regional plan may have different included destinations and validity periods.

Phone compatibility in Ethiopia

Compare your phone with 4G bands B1, B3, B8, B20 and 5G bands n78 in the existing Ethiopia network table. Support for more of the listed bands gives the phone more options when connecting, while the selected product, location and local network conditions determine the service available.

Set up the Ethiopia eSIM for your trip

Keep the QR code and installation instructions available offline, and complete each step according to the selected product's instructions.

When validity starts: Validity-start rules can differ by product. Check the selected plan details before installation and travel.

  1. Confirm that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM before purchase.
  2. Save the QR code or manual installation details somewhere you can reach without mobile data.
  3. Use reliable Wi-Fi to install the profile at the time recommended in the product instructions.
  4. When you are ready to use it, select the travel eSIM for cellular data and apply the stated roaming and APN settings.
  5. Keep roaming disabled on your home line if you want to avoid using its travel data.

How to enjoy Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a land of ancient history and dramatic landscapes. From the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to the lunar expanse of the Danakil Depression and the high plateaus of the Simien Mountains, the country offers experiences found nowhere else in Africa. Begin in the capital, Addis Ababa, to visit the National Museum and sample Ethiopian coffee culture. Allow at least ten days for a northern circuit that includes Bahir Dar, Lalibela, and Axum. Travel between regions is best done by domestic flights or private drivers; internal roads are slow and often rough. Book guides in advance for sensitive sites such as the Danakil Depression, where a mandatory armed escort is required. Be aware that internet access can be patchy and cash is king - carry enough birr for daily expenses.

Key attractions

Ethiopia’s UNESCO World Heritage sites are the main draw, but the country also rewards those who venture beyond the obvious.

  • Lalibela Churches - Eleven monolithic churches carved from rock in the 12th century. The most famous is Bet Giyorgis, shaped as a cross. Allow a full day; hire a local guide to explain the tunnels and passages.
  • Simien Mountains National Park - A UNESCO-listed landscape of jagged peaks and deep valleys. Home to the endemic Walia ibex and gelada baboons. Multi-day treks require a ranger and a cook.
  • Danakil Depression - One of the hottest and lowest places on Earth. Visit Erta Ale’s lava lake and the colourful salt flats. Trips are physically demanding and always led by an armed escort.
  • Axum (Aksum) - Ancient capital of the Axumite kingdom, with towering stelae and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, said to house the Ark of the Covenant. The museum is small but excellent.
  • Blue Nile Falls - Near Bahir Dar, best seen in the rainy season (July-September) when the water flow is strongest. A short walk from the parking area leads to viewpoints.

Local foods to try

Ethiopian cuisine is built around injera, a spongy, sourdough flatbread used to scoop up stews and curries. Most dishes are eaten with the right hand, and meals are shared from a communal platter.

  • Injera - The national staple, made from teff flour. It serves as both plate and utensil. You tear off a piece and use it to pick up the toppings.
  • Doro Wat - A spicy chicken stew simmered with berbere spice mix and hard-boiled eggs. It is often reserved for special occasions but widely available in restaurants.
  • Misir Wat - A lentil stew flavoured with ginger, garlic, and berbere. A reliable vegetarian option found on most menus.
  • Kitfo - Minced raw beef seasoned with mitmita (a chilli powder) and clarified butter. Served with a side of cottage cheese and cooked greens. Only for the adventurous; if you prefer, ask for leb leb (lightly cooked).
  • Tibs - Sautéed cubes of lamb or beef, often served with fresh chillies and a side of injera. A common choice in Ethiopian bars and restaurants.

Best time to visit

Ethiopia’s weather is shaped by altitude and the two rainy seasons. The main dry season runs from October to February, offering the most comfortable conditions for travel across most of the country. During this period, the skies are clear, roads are more passable, and trekking in the Simien Mountains is at its best. The long rains fall from June to September, making many unpaved roads muddy and difficult. However, this is also when the northern highlands are green and the Blue Nile Falls are at their most powerful. The short rains occur from March to May, with intermittent showers, particularly in the south. For the Danakil Depression, the cooler months from November to February are essential; temperatures still reach 40°C but are less extreme than in the summer. Avoid the Danakil entirely between June and August.

What to pack

Ethiopia’s range of altitudes means you will encounter very different climates in a single trip. Pack for both cool highlands and hot lowlands.

  • Layered clothing - Essential for Addis Ababa’s mild days and cool evenings, and for the Simien Mountains where temperatures can drop close to freezing at night.
  • Sturdy hiking boots - Needed for the rough terrain of Lalibela’s churches, the Simien treks, and the salt crust of the Danakil.
  • Sun and altitude protection - High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. The sun is fierce at altitude. A buff or scarf helps with dust on unpaved roads.
  • Modest clothing - Long trousers and skirts, and tops that cover the shoulders. This is respectful in Orthodox churches and rural communities.
  • Reusable water bottle - Tap water is not safe to drink. A bottle with a filter is useful, but you will also rely on bottled water.
  • A travel eSIM - A digital SIM that works on arrival avoids the hassle of buying a local SIM card and searching for a shop.

Common questions about travel eSIMs

Answers to the questions travellers most often ask about using an eSIM overseas, from choosing a data plan to setting up before departure. Ethiopia eSIM

Our eSIM connects to available local networks. As of mid-2025, Safaricom Ethiopia's network does not cover the Tigray region. Ethio Telecom has 4G concentrated in Addis Ababa and regional capitals, so coverage in rural Tigray may be limited to 3G or 2G.

Your eSIM will connect to either Ethio Telecom or Safaricom Ethiopia, depending on signal strength and availability. Both operators provide 4G on bands B1, B3, and B20. Safaricom Ethiopia also uses B8. 5G is available on band n78 from both operators.

Ethio Telecom and Safaricom Ethiopia both use 4G bands B1 and B3, which are common globally. Band B20 is used by both operators, but B1 and B3 are widely available. If your phone lacks B20, you may experience weaker coverage in some areas, but you should still connect in most cities.

This eSIM is designed for use in Ethiopia only. It will not provide service in Djibouti, Sudan, or any other neighbouring country. You would need a separate eSIM or a regional plan for multi-country travel.

Local SIM card registration laws in Ethiopia require identification. When you use an eSIM, the registration process is handled by the provider before activation. You do not need to present your passport at a store, but your identity is verified during purchase.

Compare 1 GB / 7 days, 2 GB / 15 days and 10 GB or more / 30 days. Use the shorter profiles for lighter maps and messaging use, then compare the larger allowance for streaming, video calls or work apps.

The start rule is product-specific. Review the selected plan details before installing it so you know whether any action is required before arrival.

Save the QR code, manual installation details, APN guidance and the support instructions supplied with the selected plan.
