Which India eSIM plan fits your trip?

Choose an India eSIM by matching the allowance to your trip length and expected use, then check the existing network table for phone compatibility. The page keeps its country-specific operator, band and median-speed information, while the sections below help you compare plan sizes and check operator coverage maps for your itinerary.

Start with the length of your stay, then allow for navigation, messaging, streaming and work use. A fixed-volume plan gives you one data pool across its stated validity period.

Short trip

1 GB / 7 days

Best for: A short visit where mobile data is mainly for maps, messages and occasional browsing.

This is the smallest fixed-volume profile for a stay of up to seven days.

Usage tip: Use Wi-Fi for video, photo backups and app updates to keep more data available while travelling.

Two-week trip

3 GB / 15 days

Best for: Trips of up to two weeks with regular navigation, messaging and light social-media use.

The 3 GB allowance remains available across the stated fifteen-day validity period.

Usage tip: Download maps before intercity journeys and use mobile data for live directions and updates.

Longer or higher use

10 GB or more / 30 days

Best for: Longer stays or travellers planning regular streaming, video calls or work-app use.

A larger thirty-day data pool gives heavier activities more room than the short-trip profiles.

Usage tip: Compare your normal phone usage with the available allowances and monitor usage during the trip.

Coverage in India

BSNL 3G/2G-only in many rural areas; B28 (700 MHz) used by BSNL and Jio for rural coverage, often missing from international phones; n258 mmWave deployed by Jio and Airtel but rarely supported by foreign devices.

Where to check mobile coverage in India

TRAI provides access to coverage maps from Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, with filters for available mobile technologies. Use the map for the locations on your itinerary and confirm the network details of the selected eSIM product.

Cities and accommodation

Check the operator maps for each city and the neighbourhood around your accommodation. Use the technology filters to compare the type of service shown for that location.

Intercity and rural routes

Coverage can change along long road and rail routes. Check the route as well as the destination, and compare your phone with the lower-frequency bands shown in the existing network table.

Nepal and onward travel

For an itinerary that continues beyond India, compare a matching destination plan with a regional option before departure and confirm every included country in the product details.

Phone compatibility in India

Compare your phone with the 4G and 5G bands in the existing India network table. B28 is relevant to wider-area LTE coverage in the published network notes, while n78 is listed across the 5G operators shown on the page.

Set up the India eSIM for your trip

How to Enjoy India Like a Local

India rewards travellers who slow down. In Rajasthan, wake early to see the Amber Fort before the heat and crowds arrive. At the Taj Mahal, go at sunrise when the marble glows pink. Kerala’s backwaters are best experienced on a private houseboat with a local crew who cook fresh fish from the canals. Varanasi’s ghats demand a quiet walk at dawn; skip the tourist boats and sit on the steps to watch pilgrims and priests perform puja. In the Himalayan hill stations such as Darjeeling and Shimla, skip the main mall and wander the narrow lanes where chai wallahs serve sweet milky tea. At Ranthambhore, book two safaris instead of one - the first light and the late afternoon - to maximise your chance of spotting a tiger. For connectivity, buy a local SIM from Jio or Airtel at the airport; India’s mobile data is cheap and reliable, and you will need it for maps, bookings, and payments.

Essential Attractions to Visit

India has 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so choose carefully. These five represent the country’s range:

  • Taj Mahal, Agra - Visit at sunrise on a weekday to avoid the longest queues. The mausoleum is closed on Fridays.
  • Varanasi Ghats, Uttar Pradesh - Hinduism’s holiest city. Walk the Ganges riverfront at dawn and attend the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat after sunset.
  • Amber Fort & Hawa Mahal, Jaipur - The fort sits outside the city; combine it with a visit to the Palace of the Winds. Both are photogenic by late afternoon light.
  • Kerala Backwaters - Hire a canoe with a local guide to see village life and migratory birds. Overnight houseboats are comfortable but book through a reputable operator.
  • Ranthambhore National Park, Rajasthan - One of the best places in India to see wild tigers. Book safaris months in advance during peak season (October to March).

Must-Try Foods Across India

Indian food varies wildly by region. These five dishes are widely available and worth seeking out:

  • Biryani - Fragrant layered rice with meat or vegetables. Hyderabad and Lucknow both claim the definitive version.
  • Masala Dosa - A crisp fermented crepe filled with spiced potatoes, served with coconut chutney and sambar. Best in South India, especially in Bengaluru and Chennai.
  • Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani) - Creamy, mildly spiced tomato-based curry. Delhi’s Moti Mahal is the original, but good versions exist across the north.
  • Pani Puri (Golgappa) - Crispy hollow shells filled with spiced water, tamarind and chickpeas. Eat them fresh from a street vendor; watch how locals eat first to avoid spillage.
  • Thali - A platter with small portions of dal, vegetables, rice, bread, chutney and dessert. It gives you a sampler of regional cooking. Every state has its own thali.

Always drink chai from a vendor who boils the milk; avoid ice in drinks.

Best Time to Visit Different Regions

India’s climate varies dramatically, so timing matters. For most of the country, October to March is the most comfortable window. Rajasthan, Agra and Delhi are pleasant and dry during these months. Goa’s peak season also runs from November to February, when the humidity drops. Kerala and coastal South India stay warm year-round but the monsoon (June to September) brings lush landscapes and fewer tourists; just expect daily showers. For the Himalayan regions, summer is best. Ladakh, Spiti and Manali are accessible from June to September, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The Zanskar Valley and Leh are best in July and August. Avoid visiting northern plains or Rajasthan in April to June unless you can handle extreme heat. The monsoon season (July to September) is good for Ayurveda treatments in Kerala, but not for beach holidays.

What to Pack for an India Trip

Packing for India means preparing for heat, dust, and modest cultural norms. Bring these essentials:

  • Modest, lightweight clothing - Loose cotton trousers, long skirts and tops that cover shoulders and knees. Avoid tight or revealing clothes, especially at temples and mosques.
  • Sturdy sandals or walking shoes - You’ll walk on uneven streets, temple floors and dirt paths. Sandals are easier to remove at temple entrances.
  • A small medical kit - Include antiseptic wipes, plasters, oral rehydration sachets, paracetamol and anti-diarrhoea tablets. Pharmacies are common but you may not find your usual brands.
  • Insect repellent - Mosquitoes are active at dusk and in rural areas. Choose a DEET-based repellent for high-risk malaria zones.
  • A filtered water bottle - A bottle with a built-in filter (like Grayl or LifeStraw) lets you refill from taps safely, cutting plastic waste and expense.
  • A travel eSIM - Buy an eSIM before departure so you can connect as soon as you land. India’s data networks are strong, but a local SIM takes paperwork and time.

Common questions about travel eSIMs

Answers to the questions travellers most often ask about using an eSIM overseas, from choosing a data plan to setting up before departure. India eSIM

Our information covers only networks inside India. We cannot confirm whether this eSIM includes coverage in Nepal or any neighbouring country. Check the eSIM provider's coverage map or product description for details on cross-border roaming.

Jio uses n258 for mmWave 5G, which is rarely supported by international phones. However, Jio also uses n28 and n78 for 5G. If your phone supports n78, it can still access Jio's 5G in many areas, though not the fastest mmWave layer.

In rural areas, BSNL often runs only 3G or 2G, and both BSNL and Jio rely on band B28 (700 MHz) for rural coverage. Many international phones lack B28. Without that band, your connection in those areas may be weak or unavailable.

Vi stands for Vodafone Idea. It is a single operator, not two separate networks. If your phone scans, look for "Vi" or "Vodafone IN" or "Idea". Its 4G uses bands B1, B3, B8, and B41, and its 5G uses n78.

Indian law requires physical SIM buyers to provide ID and biometric registration. For eSIMs sold by international providers, the requirement varies. Check your eSIM provider's setup instructions to confirm whether any ID upload or passport scan is needed.

Use 1 GB for a short light-use trip, 3 GB for a longer stay with regular maps and messaging, or compare plans of 10 GB and above for streaming, video calls or work use.

Use the operator coverage maps available through TRAI and filter by mobile technology. Check your accommodation, main destinations and the road or rail routes between them.

The start rule is product-specific. Review the selected plan details before installing it so you know whether any action is required before arrival.
