VPN for India: privacy, access and setup before you fly

Stay connected in India with reliable VPN access, despite low-level internet restrictions and a permanent TikTok ban.

Before departure

What internet access in India means for travellers

India imposes low-severity internet restrictions focused on social media and political content, including a permanent ban on TikTok. Regional internet shutdowns occur occasionally, but overall censorship is minimal. A VPN is not strictly required for most travellers, but it can be useful for accessing your home streaming services, banking apps, or maintaining privacy on public Wi-Fi networks. Major ISPs like Jio Reliance, Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and ACT Fibernet offer widespread coverage, especially in cities. Speeds are generally good in urban areas, though rural connectivity can be patchy. Using a VPN may also help you bypass any temporary regional blocks during local events. Choose a provider with strong encryption and a clear no-log policy. Avoid free VPNs, which often log data or inject ads. For most trips, a VPN is a precaution rather than a necessity, but having one installed before you arrive gives you the flexibility to manage your online access as needed.

VPN rules and online privacy in India

India is not part of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. Data privacy is governed by the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, which sets rules for how companies handle personal information. Internet service providers in India are subject to government data retention and lawful interception requirements. This means ISPs may log your browsing activity and share it with authorities if requested. While the DPDP Bill strengthens individual privacy rights in principle, enforcement is still evolving. For travellers, this means your online activity is not automatically private. A VPN encrypts your connection and prevents your ISP from seeing which sites you visit, adding a layer of protection against both commercial data collection and government monitoring. It also helps secure your data on unsecured hotel or airport Wi-Fi. Do not rely on a VPN to anonymise illegal activity, but do use one to keep your personal communications and financial transactions private during your stay.

Internet rules and enforcement can change. Check current official advice and local law before travelling. A VPN does not make prohibited activity lawful.

Set up mobile data and a VPN for India

Before arriving in India, install your VPN and test it on your home network. Indian mobile networks may block or throttle certain protocols, so choose a VPN with obfuscation features if you encounter connection issues. Public Wi-Fi in cafes, hotels, and airports is common but often unencrypted. Always connect through your VPN when using these networks. If you need to access banking apps from home, check that your VPN server is in your home country. For streaming local Indian services, you may need to disable your VPN to access geo-locked content like Hotstar or JioCinema. Carry a backup connection method, such as a local SIM with a data plan, in case your VPN is blocked temporarily during regional shutdowns.

  1. Install the eSIM and VPN while you still have a trusted connection in Singapore.
  2. Save the eSIM instructions and important booking details for offline access.
  3. After landing, test normal mobile data before switching on the VPN.
  4. If performance drops, change one VPN setting at a time so you can identify the cause.

Catalogue availability can depend on location, account region, licensing and the service's own rules. A VPN can change the apparent network location, but cannot guarantee access.
