Senegal offers a mix of urban energy, coastal calm, and rich cultural life. Base yourself in Dakar for a few days to explore its markets, music venues, and the lively Corniche. From there, take a short ferry to the Sine-Saloum Delta, a labyrinth of mangroves best seen by pirogue. The delta's birdlife and quiet fishing villages provide a complete change of pace.
Senegalese hospitality is genuine. Learn a few phrases in Wolof - Na nga def? (How are you?) - and you will be met with smiles. Eat at local maquis (street-side eateries) for the most authentic flavours. With patience and a willingness to go slowly, you will find West Africa's rhythms rewarding.
Senegal has two main seasons: a dry season from November to April and a wet season from June to October. The best time for travel is during the dry season, when skies are clear, humidity is low, and temperatures in coastal areas are pleasant. December and January are particularly comfortable, though this is also peak tourist season.
The wet season brings higher humidity and afternoon downpours, but landscapes turn green and crowds thin. May and September-October can be good compromises: fewer visitors, lower prices, and still manageable weather. August is the hottest and wettest month, especially inland. If you are coming for birdwatching, aim for November through February when migratory birds are present in large numbers.
Prepare for dust. A reusable scarf or buff can protect your face in Harmattan winds (December to February). Pack a small torch for power cuts, which occur occasionally even in hotels. Leave expensive jewellery at home; Senegal is generally safe, but discretion prevents unwanted attention.
