Pre-Flight Check: What to Verify Before You Begin
Before you start configuring a VPN on your Samsung Galaxy phone, complete a short pre-flight test. This ensures your device is ready and avoids wasted effort.
- Confirm your internet connection - Open a mobile browser and load a few websites. If pages fail to load, fix your Wi-Fi or mobile data first.
- Check One UI version - Go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information. One UI 4 or later is required for the Quick Settings VPN toggle to appear.
- Review app permissions - The VPN app will request permission to create a VPN profile. Accept this prompt when it appears. Without it, the tunnel cannot be established.
- Disable other VPN apps - If you have previously installed another VPN or proxy app, remove or disable it to prevent conflicts.
- Note your current IP address - Visit a site that displays your public IP (e.g. whatismyipaddress). Write it down. Later you will compare it to the VPN-assigned IP.
This check takes two minutes and saves you from chasing network problems that are not related to the VPN itself.
Installing the VPN App on a Samsung Galaxy Phone Running One UI
After the pre-flight check, install your chosen VPN app. The safest source is the Google Play Store, which is pre-installed on all Samsung Galaxy phones. You may also use the Samsung SmartThings store, but most VPN providers publish updates first on Google Play.
- Open the Play Store and search for your VPN provider’s app.
- Tap Install and wait for the download to finish.
- Open the app and sign in with the account you created on the provider’s website.
- Grant the app permission to set up a VPN profile when the system prompt appears. This is a one-time approval.
- Follow the in-app setup wizard. You will typically be asked to select a server location. For a Singapore traveller, choose a server in a country where the service you need is available.
- Turn on the VPN toggle inside the app. The phone will show a key icon in the status bar when the tunnel is active.
After installation, verify the connection by checking your IP address again. If it matches the location you selected, the VPN is working. If it still shows your Singapore IP, the tunnel may not be active.
Using the Quick Settings Panel to Control the VPN
One UI 4 and later versions include a built-in VPN toggle in the Quick Settings panel. This is separate from the VPN app’s own switch. Using the Quick Settings panel allows you to start or stop the VPN without opening the app.
To add the VPN toggle: swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, tap the edit button (pencil icon), and drag the VPN button to your active row. Tap Done. The toggle will now appear every time you pull down Quick Settings.
When you tap the VPN toggle, One UI will ask which VPN profile to use. The profile created by your VPN app will appear in the list. Select it and confirm. The phone will connect to the last server you chose in the app.
Note that the Quick Settings toggle does not let you change server locations. For that, you must open the VPN app. Also, if you turn off the VPN here, the app will still show it as connected for a few seconds until the state syncs.
Troubleshooting Common VPN Issues on Samsung Galaxy Phones
Even a properly configured VPN can run into problems. Here are the most frequent issues and what to try.
- VPN connects but no websites load - Try switching to a different server location in the app. Sometimes a particular server is overloaded or blocked. If that does not help, restart the app and the phone.
- VPN disconnects randomly - Go to Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings and ensure VPN is not set to disconnect when the screen locks. Also check if the app’s battery optimisation setting is interfering. In Settings > Device Care > Battery, find the VPN app and set it to Unrestricted.
- Quick Settings toggle is greyed out - This usually means no VPN profile has been created. Reinstall the app and be sure to approve the profile creation prompt. If the profile still does not appear, go to Settings > VPN and manually add a profile using the provider’s configuration file.
- Streaming service says you are still in Singapore - The service may detect your location through GPS or DNS. Turn off location services in Settings > Location. Also clear the app’s cache or reinstall it while the VPN is active.
- Battery drains faster with VPN on - VPN encryption consumes extra processing power. To conserve battery, avoid streaming video or making video calls over the VPN unless necessary. You can also switch to a VPN protocol that uses less CPU, if your provider offers one.
