Which Mongolia eSIM plan fits your trip?

Choose your Mongolia eSIM by matching the allowance and validity period to your trip, then compare the selected product details with the local network, band and speed references already shown on this page.

Start with the length of your stay, then allow for navigation, messaging, streaming and work use. Each option below is a plan size that is currently available for this destination.

Short trip

1 GB / 7 days

Best for: A short visit with maps, messages and occasional browsing.

This option pairs the 1 GB allowance with a stated validity period of 7 days.

Usage tip: Save maps before longer journeys and use Wi-Fi for large downloads.

Two-week trip

3 GB / 15 days

Best for: A stay of around two weeks with regular navigation and messaging.

The 3 GB allowance remains available across a stated validity period of 15 days.

Usage tip: Keep automatic app updates and cloud backups on Wi-Fi.

Longer or higher use

10 GB or more / 30 days

Best for: A longer stay or more frequent streaming, video calls or work use.

The 10 GB or more / 30 days profile provides a larger data pool than the short-trip options on this page.

Usage tip: Compare the allowance with your normal phone usage and monitor it during the trip.

Coverage in Mongolia

Outside Ulaanbaatar and provincial capitals, coverage is often 3G-only or absent; large areas of the Gobi Desert and remote steppe have no mobile service. Mobicom and Unitel operate 5G in central Ulaanbaatar only.

How to check mobile coverage in Mongolia

The Mongolia mobile network source is linked below as a public network reference. Check the places on your itinerary where the source offers local detail, then confirm the network information for the selected eSIM product. The operator table on this page provides the country-level reference, while the selected product details identify which network information applies to your plan.

Accommodation and daily stops

Check your accommodation and the places you expect to visit in Mongolia. Indoor reception can differ from an outdoor map, so keep the property Wi-Fi details available as well.

Journeys between stops

Review the full route rather than checking only the arrival city. Save tickets, addresses and maps offline before longer road or rail journeys.

Borders and onward travel

Check the selected product scope for every country on your itinerary. Your Mongolia plan and a regional plan may have different included destinations and validity periods.

Phone compatibility in Mongolia

Compare your phone with 4G bands B3, B7 and 5G bands n78 in the existing Mongolia network table. Support for more of the listed bands gives the phone more options when connecting, while the selected product, location and local network conditions determine the service available.

Set up the Mongolia eSIM for your trip

Keep the QR code and installation instructions available offline, and complete each step according to the selected product's instructions.

When validity starts: Validity-start rules can differ by product. Check the selected plan details before installation and travel.

  1. Confirm that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM before purchase.
  2. Save the QR code or manual installation details somewhere you can reach without mobile data.
  3. Use reliable Wi-Fi to install the profile at the time recommended in the product instructions.
  4. When you are ready to use it, select the travel eSIM for cellular data and apply the stated roaming and APN settings.
  5. Keep roaming disabled on your home line if you want to avoid using its travel data.

How to Enjoy Mongolia

From the vast steppe to the Gobi Desert, Mongolia offers experiences that reward preparation and flexibility. The best way to enjoy the country is to use its nomadic rhythms: stay in a traditional ger camp, ride a sturdy Mongolian horse across open plains, and share a meal with local herders. Buddhist monasteries such as Gandan in Ulaanbaatar and the ruins of Karakorum offer a quiet counterpoint to the landscape.

Keep in mind that distances are enormous and roads are often unpaved. A private driver-guide is essential for most itineraries. English is not widely spoken outside the capital, so download a phrasebook or translation app in advance. Mongolian hospitality is genuine, but always ask permission before photographing people or entering a ger. Tipping is not expected but a small gift, such as fruit or biscuits, is appreciated when staying with families.

Top Attractions in Mongolia

Mongolia's natural and cultural sights are spread across a vast area. Prioritise a few rather than trying to see everything.

  • Gobi Desert - Camp among towering sand dunes at Khongoryn Els and look for dinosaur fossils at Bayanzag. A guided 4x4 tour is the only practical way to explore.
  • Khustain Nuruu National Park - Home to Przewalski's horses (takhi), which were successfully reintroduced. A half-day drive from Ulaanbaatar, the park offers short hikes and excellent wildlife viewing.
  • Terelj National Park - Granite rock formations and a large statue of Genghis Khan make this a popular day trip. Stay overnight in a ger camp for a quieter experience.
  • Gandan Monastery - The main active Buddhist monastery in Ulaanbaatar. Visit during morning prayers to see monks chanting.
  • Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park - A volcanic crater lake in central Mongolia, ideal for hiking and birdwatching. The park is less crowded than Terelj.

Mongolian Food to Try

Mongolian cuisine is meat and dairy heavy, reflecting the nomadic lifestyle. Portions are generous and flavours are simple.

  • Buuz - Steamed dumplings filled with minced mutton and onion. They are a staple at celebrations and are best eaten hot with a splash of vinegar.
  • Khorkhog - A celebratory dish of mutton chunks cooked with hot stones inside a sealed metal pot. The meat is tender and smoky; the stones are passed around to warm your hands.
  • Tsuivan - Stir-fried noodles with mutton, cabbage, and carrots. It is the most common street food and a reliable hot meal outside Ulaanbaatar.
  • Airag - Fermented mare's milk, mildly alcoholic and sour. Try it at a ger camp or during Naadam. It is an acquired taste, so sip slowly.

Vegetarians will struggle in rural areas. Most soups and noodle dishes contain meat stock. Pack protein bars and nuts as backup.

Best Time to Visit Mongolia

Mongolia has an extreme continental climate. Summer, from June to August, is the only reliable season for comfortable travel. Daytime temperatures range from 20 °C to 30 °C, and the landscape is green. The Naadam Festival in mid-July is the highlight, with wrestling, horse racing, and archery. Book ger camps and transport months in advance.

Spring (May) and autumn (September) are cooler and less crowded. May can be windy and dusty; September offers golden larch forests in the north. Winter (November to March) is brutally cold, with temperatures below −20 °C across most of the country. Only visit in winter if you are joining a specialised ice-festival tour or are prepared for extreme cold.

Rain is rare but can turn unpaved roads into mud. Always allow a buffer day in your itinerary for weather delays.

What to Pack for Mongolia

Mongolia's weather is unpredictable, so pack for wide temperature swings and dusty conditions.

  • Layered clothing - A thermal base layer, fleece, and a windproof jacket. Even in summer, evenings can drop to 10 °C.
  • Sun protection - UV levels are high. Pack SPF 50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and polarised sunglasses.
  • Sturdy hiking boots - Invest in ankle-high boots with good grip. You will walk on rocky terrain, sand, and wet grass.
  • Binoculars and camera gear - Wildlife and landscapes are the main draw. A zoom lens (200 mm or longer) is useful for takhi and eagles.
  • Medications and first aid kit - Pharmacies are scarce outside Ulaanbaatar. Bring diarrhoea treatment, antiseptic wipes, and any prescription medicines.
  • A travel eSIM - Download the TPG Mobile app before departure and activate a local data plan for reliable navigation and translation on the steppe.

Leave behind jeans and heavy cotton items; they take too long to dry. A silk sleeping bag liner is useful for ger camp bedding.

Common questions about travel eSIMs

Answers to the questions travellers most often ask about using an eSIM overseas, from choosing a data plan to setting up before departure. Mongolia eSIM

Your eSIM connects to Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel, and G-Mobile. Mobicom and Unitel offer 4G on bands B3 and B7, with 5G on n78 only in central Ulaanbaatar. Skytel and G-Mobile lack 5G. Coverage outside cities is often 3G or absent.

Mobicom and Unitel use 4G bands B3 and B7, and 5G band n78. Phones lacking these bands, especially older or non-Asian models, may drop to 3G or no signal. Most modern international phones support these bands, but check your device specs.

Coverage is limited. Outside Ulaanbaatar and provincial capitals, service is often 3G-only or missing entirely. Large areas of the Gobi Desert and remote steppe have no mobile service. Expect no data in those regions, regardless of the eSIM.

The eSIM uses local networks without additional filtering or throttling beyond standard operator policies. Speeds are typical for Mongolia: median download 27.15 Mbps on 4G. No national-level blocks or caps beyond your plan’s fair-use limit.

No, this eSIM is for Mongolia only. Coverage stops at the border. You will need a separate eSIM or roaming plan for China, Russia, or any other neighbouring territory. The eSIM does not include cross-border roaming.

Compare 1 GB / 7 days, 3 GB / 15 days and 10 GB or more / 30 days. Use the shorter profiles for lighter maps and messaging use, then compare the larger allowance for streaming, video calls or work apps.

The start rule is product-specific. Review the selected plan details before installing it so you know whether any action is required before arrival.
